Reservation

Let us suppose 1000 students are studying in 12th (HSC) standard in a small town. Out of them 300 students are from upper class/upper middle class family and 700 students from middle/lower middle class family.
In that town, some Govt. and some private colleges are there. Few of the Govt. colleges are popular and the student will definitely get a job if he finishes his degree in those colleges.
Consider the folowing exam results (entrance + HSC):
1. Most of the students from upper class/upper middle class family score more than 80%.
2. Most of the students from middle/lower middle class family score less than 80%.
Govt. college X can admit 250 students in a year. If the seats are given purely based on merit, the students from the first category will fill all the seats and very few from the second category.

The reason for the first category of students to get good score was they were given proper coaching. And this will be possible only if their family is economically good. I am damn sure that all of these students attended some coaching classes.
If you see the second category of students, their families were not able to support them financially and they could send their son/daughter for coaching classes.
I have the following Questions in my mind which I dont have clear answer:
1. Did both types of students get similar kind of education?
2. Should all the students be admitted purely based on merit?
3. If yes, when will the second category of students get the seat in that college?
So, the first category will continue to be the same in the future and very few of second category will migrate to the first category.

I wonder why only Doctors and Engineers are against this reservsation. If reservation is not good for the country's grwoth, why dont the other Govt. employees like teachers, advocates, police, accountants, clerks, peons.....can join with them.
I feel economically poor and bright students should be given oppurtunity. Reservation should be classified based on family income and not by caste.

I fully agree with u, reservation should be based on the financial position of the family and not based on caste.
Also Govt should strive to provide good quality education right from small age.Nowadays many schools are run mainly for business

Your last point about reservation is acceptable. Considering the economy of student, Government is already giving Scholorships for students. Economically this is enough to complete their education.
But certainly most of the government schools are lagging in good coaching to their students. The student teacher ratio is not perfect. 25:1 may give good results. But nowadays in some schools the ratio is 70:1 or more.
The quality of education is now improved well equal to the CBSE level... But the teacher's teaching level not yet improved. After revising the syllabus, now teachers are in situation to revise their subject knowledge again.

I don't think Reservation based on economic status is possible in the country of over billion population.I can accept reservation for SC/ST and BC guys from only from vilages can be included for reservation.

Earlier, in an edition of OUTLOOK, there was a feature about people who had benefited from reservation, and what almost all of them unanimously felt was that, reservation is only a gatepass and in order to make any use of it, one has to really perform well, after joining just like all others. So if there are such students who would perform well in the backward communities, once they join the course, why would they need reservation to join, when they have the knowledge and calibre to perform later.

Reservation could be based on economic conditions again, but on what basis, below poverty line, 20% above poverty line, middle class etc..? So in this case you are greatly at a disadvantage, if you are rich. Would the politicians who have bank balances, almost equal to the entire debt to the world bank for different states in India, ever think or support such an idea..?

One more thing that most politicians dont address, is that the only place where reservations can help in getting jobs is in the government, but they never increase the no. of jobs in this terribly under-staffed organization. In all other private concerns which recruit students, the primary concern is merit and not whether the candidate is an SC/ST/MBC/OBC..

In this democracy called India, no government will ever pave way for such radical reforms, because all governments are coalition governments and have to satisfy all involved so it`s all basically a stalemate.

All we can do is discuss about it, vent our feelings..

Me, first time here.. I just love your profile pic.. Nice blog. Shall try to come by once in a while.. :-)

Regards,
Srijith.

yes when i think about it more and more, we should give scholarships to people who cannot afford education. right from lower KGs to 12 standard, there should be scholarships to encourage students to study. If someone keeps failing what is the point in forcing them to college and making them a doctor. Will one go to a doctor knowking he barely passed the exam or failed 3 times.

Make the foundation strong, the tree will grow alright.
