This weekend I had been to South sister, the third tallest mountain (10,358ft) in Oregon state. We reached the Devils Lake trail head(5450ft) at 10PM on saturday, set up our tent and slept. When we woke up early (for me ;-)) in the morning at 6AM, the temperature was 39degF (4degC). Oh my God, I have never experienced this much lowest temperature. Udhadugal vedika aarambithana, udal nadunga aarambithadhu, kaigal eriya aarambithana. It was my toughest morning as I was fighting with the water to brush my teeth. At about 7Am we started our hiking. For the first 1.5 miles, we climbed in the trail path in a dense mountain hemlock forest. There we saw a small eye catching river (see the picture). After reaching the top of this mountain, we saw the beatiful South sister mountain and we walked on a flat highland (Moraine lake valley) for 1 mile. Yesterday I read an article about supercomputer in my office intranet. I came to know that the world's fastest supercomputer uses 1,31,072 processors. Its unbelievable right?? Also it has 32,768GB of main memory (RAM) and executes 2,80,600 floating point operations (GFlops) per second. Here is http://www.top500.org/list/2006/06/100 the list of top 500 supercomputers. Hope you all might know that July 4th has been celebrated as US Independence day. Since it fell on tuesday we got a long weekend for 4 days. On July 4th evening, we had been to Seattle to watch Independence day fireworks show. It was performed at the middle of a lake and people gathered in a park near to the lake to watch the show. All the streets near to the park were jam packed and we struggled a lot to find a place to park our car. It took us more than 45 mins to park our car (also we paid 10$ :-( for that ). As usual SUN waved 'tata' only at 9:30PM and sunlight was there till 10PM. This info. might be old to some of you. Following is a 2 minute movie made by M.Night Shyamalan, the famous thriller movie director (director of "The Sixth Sense", "Signs",....) for American Express card. I was very happy to see him in this advertisement for an american product. :-) The same movie & behind the scenes are available at American Express website. Nayagan Till now I have seen a few parts of Nayagan movie. Last week I got an oppurtunity to watch the entire movie. It was a perfect team work and worth watching it. Let us suppose 1000 students are studying in 12th (HSC) standard in a small town. Out of them 300 students are from upper class/upper middle class family and 700 students from middle/lower middle class family. In that town, some Govt. and some private colleges are there. Few of the Govt. colleges are popular and the student will definitely get a job if he finishes his degree in those colleges. Consider the folowing exam results (entrance + HSC): 1. Most of the students from upper class/upper middle class family score more than 80%. 2. Most of the students from middle/lower middle class family score less than 80%. Govt. college X can admit 250 students in a year. If the seats are given purely based on merit, the students from the first category will fill all the seats and very few from the second category. This weekend went fine for me. Its been two weeks since I entered into the United states. In the first weekend, I just went with my colleague (Actually I didnt have an idea to buy anything) to a shopping mall in Bellevue which is very near to Microsoft headquarters. Thought of buying a pair of shoes. But I could not find a good one :-(. My roommates are staying here for more than a year and they know almost all the places in Washington state. So, I asked them to take me to a nice place. Initially we planned to go to Mount Rainier and started our journey. But unfortunately the roads were closed as it was covered by snow. Then we proceeded to CRYSTAL mountain which is famous for SKIing. Since this is my first time to touch & see snow, I was amazed to see the place.
